#11: Mason Montgomery

What Outworking Your Competition Really Means

Mason Montgomery was a four year starter at linebacker in high school, broke the schools all time tackles record, and was twice conference defensive player of the year. Standing 5’11 and being relatively slow, he was overlooked in the recruiting process by division I schools, and chose Butte Community College with the hopes of earning a D1 scholarship. After dominating for two years at Butte, he was offered a scholarship from Cal Poly, achieving his goal. After a year as a backup he fought his way into the starting lineup as a Senior, and then led Cal Poly in his final collegiate season. After college he played a year professionally in Germany before hanging up the cleats.

He posted incredible numbers in the weight room during his pro day. His max bench press was 420 lbs, and he put up 225 lbs 29 times.

Mason’s consistent theme throughout his career was exceeding external expectations though hard work and grit. Having trained with him, I’ve seen his overwhelming work ethic first hand. In this episode we discuss how he cultivated this extreme work ethic - specifically the mental skills required to outwork the people around you.

In the intro to this episode I discuss the following petition in Oregon that aims to legalize psilocybin therapy in Oregon. If you’re an Oregon resident you can sign the petition here.
