#9: Bay'lee Purdy

Shooters Shoot

Bay’lee Purdy was a three sport star in high school, and was named “Ms. Colorado” for her division. She scored 51 points in a high school game, and averaged 33 as a Senior. She accepted a scholarship to Division I Northern Colorado, and played one season before transferring to Regis University to play with her big Sister one last time. She had tremendous success at Regis, earning First Team All-RMAC honors for three consecutive seasons. As a sophomore she made 88 three pointers at a 39% clip, which is the second most in school history. She became the primary scorer as a Junior and Senior, and was among the conference leaders in scoring both seasons. As a Junior and Senior she shot 92% and 90% from the free throw line respectively. She’s now an assistant coach at Briar Cliff University in Iowa.

In this conversation we walk through her background as a player, we discuss her special season playing with her sister, and then we dive into the nuances of shooting. I ask her about how she learned to shoot, her philosophy on shooting workouts, the mental side of shooting, visualization, the importance of maintaining imagination and creativity in basketball, mastering free throws, the difficulties of teaching shooting, and other topics.
